Edward Benavides

Mr. Benavides has served as Assistant Director for the Parks & Recreation Department with the City of San Antonio, Texas, since October 2009. In this position, he assists in providing oversight of the department which includes operations, maintenance, park projects, natural areas, the greenway trails program, and park acquisition. Prior to serving in this position, Mr. Benavides served as Executive Assistant to City Manager Sheryl Sculley.  In this position, he provided professional support to the City Manager and the Office of the City Manager in a variety of areas.  He supervised the administrative activities of the Office of City Council, the City Council agenda process and the Council Action Team. 

 

In 2004, Mr. Benavides was a participant in the management assistant program within the City Manager’s Office, working directly for an Assistant City Manager and retired City Manager Rolando Bono. As Management Assistant, he was responsible for handling special projects, performance measurement, City Council and citizen inquiries. Prior to his move to the Office of the City Manager, Mr. Benavides worked in the Department of Community Initiatives as a Management Analyst.  He has been employed with the City of San Antonio since 2002.

 

Mr. Benavides also has more than ten years of private and public sector experience including working for the former Texas Department of Human Services in Austin, Texas, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs in Albany, New York.

 

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Edward holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of the Incarnate Word and a master of arts degree from Our Lady of the Lake University.

 

In addition to serving on the board of the International Hispanic Network, he served as president of the Urban Management Assistants of South Texas and has participated on several committees for the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).  In addition, Mr. Benavides is an advisory board member for the University of the Incarnate Word.
